Why do you need a rug pad?

Why You Need a Rug Pad

While we recommend a rug pad for all rugs, they’re especially important for flatweaves, whose slim profile requires extra padding.

A rug pad prevents unwanted bunching and sliding, adds a subtle lift, and gives your rug a more cushioned feel underfoot.

Our rug pads are made of recycled felt and natural rubber, whereas lesser rug pads’ thin, sticky web can damage your flooring.

Moisture and mildew resistant, a rug pad stops dirt and grime from settling in your rug’s fibers.

The right rug pad

A must-have for flatweaves and other lower-pile pieces, a rug pad is the secret ingredient to maintaining your rug’s appearance and longevity. Width-wise, you’ll want to trim your rug pad so it’s 1-2” shorter than your rug on all four sides. Height-wise, we offer two premium rug pad options, both made of cozy recycled felt and natural rubber.

A luxurious hand-knotted mohair wool rug

  • Mohair and New Zealand wool on wool and cotton foundation
    • You may find traces of dried hay, grass, or straw in your rug as grazing sheep often collect plant matter in their coats. Remove gently by hand or with tweezers.
    • Authentic wool fibers were used to weave this rug. Please note that when wool gets damp, it will smell like a wet sheep. This is the scent of lanolin, which acts as a waxy barrier against dirt and moisture.
  • Plush pile: approximately 1.25" thick (31.75 mm)
  • Color palette: golden olive, warm vanilla beige
  • The shedding quantity and duration varies by foot traffic and rug construction
  • Shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6-9 months
  • Due to its handmade nature a 5% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected.
  • Dimensions: 10'4" x 11'
  • Estimated to ship in 13 to 14 weeks
  • Dust and dirt that accumulate in your rug can erode the fibers over time. The best way to combat this is to take your rug outside and give it a good shake every couple of weeks. Depending on how large it is, you may need to recruit a friend to help. Also, be sure to get a rug pad-this helps to preserve your rug in spite of dirt.
  • If shaking it out isn't possible, you can vacuum it instead-just be cautious, and don't use a rotary vacuum, because it can damage the fibers. Once or twice a month, use the suction attachment gently, from side to side. Once or twice a year, flip your rug over and vacuum the back. To ensure equal wear and protect against walk patterns, change your rug's direction periodically.
  • Clean on low power with a non-rotary vacuum or suction attachment (no spinning brush) only.
  • Lightly vacuum the rug once a week
  • Use a high-quality rug pad to absorb shock and reduce damage to the pile
  • Once a year, let it sunbathe. Hang it in the sun for a few hours when it's hottest, and flip it over midway through, to expose both sides to direct sunlight. This sun-bleaching helps further sanitize the wool. It's a natural method to bleach and deodorize it.
  • Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
  • Spot cleaning instructions:
    • Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
    • Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
    • If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
    • Repeat this process until the stain is removed

The Collection

Lush hand-knotted shag rugs done in a wide variety of hues. Their soft hand is courtesy of a premium blend of yarns, and New Zealand wool yarn, which is space-dyed in small batches for an abrash effect that adds depth and variance of color. Plush, or shag, rugs are classic pieces with attitude, beloved by designers (and non-designers) alike for their comfort, personality, and timelessness.

The Material

Mohair, made from the coats of Angora goats, is considered a luxury fiber for its soft, silk-like textile. But it's not only beautiful, it's hardy: a piece of mohair is stronger than a piece of similarly-sized steel. We mix this with New Zealand wool, a premium wool beloved for its softness and long fibers. Like all wools, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, as well as lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. This premium wool blend is hand-knotted onto a wool and cotton foundation for flexibility and durability.

The Maker

Our partner is a third-generation family-run weaving house in Bhadohi, India. They specialize in plush pile rugs, and their immense knowledge helped us improve construction for durability and less shedding. Their values are twofold: creating the highest-quality product and taking care of their team, supporting their weavers in whatever they need.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
