Washing Machine Size Requirements for Herd

Our rugs are compatible with most standard washing machines, but just to be safe, here are a few guidelines:

You do need a rug pad
Here's why

Why You Need a Rug Pad

While we recommend a rug pad for all rugs, they’re especially important for flatweaves, whose slim profile requires extra padding.

A rug pad prevents unwanted bunching and sliding, adds a subtle lift, and gives your rug a more cushioned feel underfoot.

Our rug pads are made of recycled felt and natural rubber, whereas lesser rug pads’ thin, sticky web can damage your flooring.

Moisture and mildew resistant, a rug pad stops dirt and grime from settling in your rug’s fibers.

The right rug pad

A must-have for flatweaves and other lower-pile pieces, a rug pad is the secret ingredient to maintaining your rug’s appearance and longevity. Width-wise, you’ll want to trim your rug pad so it’s 1-2” shorter than your rug on all four sides. Height-wise, we offer two premium rug pad options, both made of cozy recycled felt and natural rubber.

Hand-knotted wool rug from India

  • 100% wool on cotton foundation
  • High pile: about .70" thick (18mm)
  • Color palette: bone beige, evergreen, olive green, cantaloupe, terracotta, royal blue
  • The shedding quantity and duration varies by foot traffic and rug construction
  • Shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6-9 months
  • We recommend you pair this piece with a rug pad for comfort and longevity
  • Due to its handmade nature a 5% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected.
  • Vacuum on low power with a non-rotary (no spinning brush) vacuum or suction attachment only.
  • Every few months, you'll also want to flip your rug over and vacuum the back to get the grit out of the foundation of the rug. It also helps to rotate your rug once a year to ensure even wear over time.
  • Every 3-5 years, we recommend getting your rug professionally hand-washed. Please do not take it to get steam or dry cleaned-this will almost certainly damage the rug! Hand-washing requires the use of a pH-balanced shampoo, worked into the rug by hand with a soft-bristled brush, before being rinsed thoroughly. This process should be repeated a few times.
  • Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
  • Use a high-quality rug pad to absorb shock and reduce damage to the pile
  • Spot cleaning instructions:
    • Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
    • Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
    • If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
    • Repeat this process until the stain is removed
  • From time to time you may spot tiny flecks of dried hay or grass woven within the fibers-traces of the grazing pastures where the sheep once roamed. These can be removed by hand or with tweezers.
  • Because this rug is made from natural wool rich in lanolin, it may release a subtle sheep-like scent when damp. It's simply the fiber's natural character, and it will disappear once dry.

The Collection

Embrace creature comforts with our Wild Collection. These hand-knotted wool rugs are inspired by the rich colors and playful motifs in traditional Gabbeh-style rugs—with a twist. Wild creatures replace herding animals, and their sharp geometric features are tamed and softened, giving them a subtle, modern look.

The Design

Herd's grazing giraffes and elephants are framed by dual-tone borders.

The Material

Unparalleled for centuries, wool has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, as well as lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. These pieces are hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation for added durability.

The Maker

Our Good Weave-certified partner began 15 years ago in Mirzapur, India. Prizing honesty, transparency, and ethical practices, they're passionate about the rugs they create, guaranteeing high quality and innovation.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
